Tiny little stuff settling down in words.
Gang bought Duras' 'The lover' after my recommendation, which I took after Jady's recommendation. A tiny little hard cover you can sit down and finish whithin a day, with warning of major mood swings afterwards, maybe.
I picked up Hermann Hess' Demian, which was across the shelf of Thomas Mann, who wrote the preface for Demian. Thomas began by saying 'the last time I shook hands with Hess...'. They were intimate friends or literary companions I assume and even after their era their books were grouped together as neighbors. I find that a little touching, and remarkable. (One more reason not to categorise in alphabeticals, though it's easier to locate)
The name 'Sinclair' = light, while 'Demian' = demon. Their friendship is questionable and the novel's about awakening to the sub-conscious and individuality. The crazy thing about Demian is, it's written in 3 weeks!!! (albeit citation needed)
Direct quote from wiki:
Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth is a Bildungsroman by Hermann Hesse, first published in 1919, but a prologue was added in 1960. Demian was first published under the pseudonym "Emil Sinclair", the name of the narrator of the story, but Hesse was later revealed to be the author. The name "Emil Sinclair" was chosen because he was a friend of the poet Novalis, whom Hesse adored.
In it, Emil Sinclair is a young boy who was raised in a bourgeois home described as a Scheinwelt. "Scheinwelt" is a play of words and means world of light as well as world of illusion. Through the novel, accompanied and prompted by his mysterious classmate Max Demian, he descends from and revolts against the superficial ideals of this world, eventually awakening into a realization of self.
I watched 'The Prestige' (yes Jady, wonderful performance of err... that... er.... Velvelt Goldmine reproter! Bravo!!) , and 'Pan's Labyrinth', which I suppose could qualify as 'mindfuck'... depending on your take in the conclusion. It's a clever integration of war crimes with fairy tales, two parallel storylines which confuse (sometimes) and contrast to accentuate the loss of innocence. If you haven't yet watched it, I have to warn you it's not for children. The amount of bloodshed and grotesqueness is never benign.
Guizi is leaving this Thur. The first real separation so to speak but again we're still on the same continent. I'm grateful I haven't lost her. When it comes to friends, she's the best. Little more than that, you slash yourself and ask why. Sometimes I wonder if intimacy and comfort of being around another person is merely a matter of time.
(Spider lilly)
