Live Earth & 1408

I was watching the best collection of Live Earth concert clips this afternoon (on TV). Linkin Park's performance was awesome!

Btw, · · · — — — · · · = SOS (International Morse code distress signal)

That's not what I wanted to discuss. Live Earth is an international campaign to raise awareness on global warming and you can read more about it on wiki. The idea is started by the Americans but isn't it ironic that US who has not rectified the Kyoto Protocol and who's one of the biggest green house gas emitters is hosting this environmental awareness event? The figure on wiki says the event alone costs 30k+ tonnes of carbon footprint just to lug artists here and there. I wonder how much is the raw physical benefit besides a short-lived high-dosage media effect. After all the most effectual way to reduce emission is by curbing multinational company productions. Back at you Americans! China's a big emitter too as generally the case of major developing countries but I wonder how much of that big pie is contributed by overseas companies (ref 'Manufactured Landscape'). Anyway, what a brilliant, dazzling bubble! I agree with one of the artists (criticized for sounding negative) that we just get together, have some fun and 'get healthier'. Talking about how you instigate awareness through basic education and proper management, we have to go back to the root of problem. I'm not saying Live Earth is a useless move, just it's not as meaningful as it scale implies. Anyway a good concert should brighten up your day.

I went to watch 1408 tonight, more for the sake of socializing coz I'm not into scary movies. But it's based on Stephen King's novel and starring John Cusack. Why not? Turned out it's a psychological thriller with great visuals. Although Stephen King pulled his old trick arousing audience's sentimentality by playing around family issues, it's still a good watch. On a side note, I've been watching a lot of 'dream' movies lately. 1408 is similar to Paprika in one concept: You never know whether you're still trapped in a dream or back to reality. The dividing line has vanished somewhere in the suspense, or it IS the genuine punch line.

My favourite cuts are (spoiler warning!!)
1. Enslin (holding a tape recorder) walked around the room, described each painting and spoke like a mad writer!

2. Escaping from 1408 to 1410. What a terrific sky walk!

Synopsis (from IMDB): Based on the short Stephen King horror story of the same name, 1408 surrounds supernatural writer Mike Enslin, an author of two hit books focusing on supernatural phenomena. As research for his latest book, Enslin is determined to check out the notorious room 1408 in a New York City hotel by personally staying as a guest in the fabled room. With the intention that 1408 is just a myth perpetuated by stories and rumor that Enslin has collected for his past works. However, hotel manager Mr. Olin has strong objections to Enslin's stay and only warns him of possible danger to come. But Enslin is determined to go through and convinced that the horrific past of 1408 is just mere coincidence and a myth. But what Mike Enslin is about to experience is no myth, as 1408 truly is a room where the guests don't check out by noon. Written by mystic80
