网游笔记

所谓的脸盲症,或面部失认症,简单来说就是当obama拿起golf球竿走到你面前时,你心想完了完了,tiger woods来访我还没刷牙洗脸。

患有“脸盲症”的病人往往记忆力正常,也不具有其他识别障碍,这说明视觉系统对面部信息的处理有着专门的机制(fusiform face area),而在处理过程中某个环节的出错导致了“目中无人”事件的发生。

脸部专属区域与记忆脑区的通信障碍可能是“脸盲症”的症结所在,家人的脸在脸部专属区域所生成的标识符,总是不能在记忆脑区触发后继的反应,即无法形成相关的记忆。脑海中缺少容颜的烙印或许另有一桩好处,那就是想象能够不受过往的羁绊,天马行空。

有孔虫的茫茫骨灰堆成了可口的粉色沙滩

中国国家地理09年第1期:粉色的、紫色的、绿色的、黑色的、白色的沙滩!

我是第一次知道还有粉色的沙滩,其中最为出名的是巴哈马的哈伯岛沙滩(harbor island in bahama)。近看是肉色或白色,但鸟瞰下和碧蓝的海水对比就显得格外粉嫩!本命理科的你们骨头里肯定在念“什么矿物质是粉色的为什么为什么啊?”这种geek问题吧,别不好意思承认!先自爆一下,我家两个化学博士都沉默满久的,然后很切切的反问:“不会是铁化物吧?”= =||| (这个学位的含铁量不容忽视)



杂志上是这么写的:海洋中有种古老的原生动物—有孔虫(foraminifera,an amoeba),5亿年前一直繁衍至今。有孔虫能分泌钙质或硅质,形成外壳,死后成为沙滩堆积物的重要来源。有着红色或亮粉色外壳的有壳虫,就是巴哈马粉色沙滩的创造者。



别忘了,当你在梦幻般的粉色沙滩上漫步时,你正一步一个脚印的践踏着5亿年的阿米巴虫骨灰。

The first adrenalin surge that starts a journey

I watched national geographic's production 'inside the living body' and sort of reviewed some of the basic physio knowledge which should've stayed with my neural circuit after 3 years of college education, but obviously it slipped out. Like, I can't remember superior vena cava, or peristalsis, or pyloric sphincter, or that bone ear that's spelt with a 'c' something lea. All i can say is, OMG.

Everything's in the title. Our journey starts with the first adrenalin surge that pumps awake a complicated ensemble of engines. My second biggest impression is the last thousand sperms that make it to the egg. The electronic image or whatever image it is showing swarmps of sperms scattering and streaming out like silver dots in a milky way is quite something.

There're also abundant video footage of wet pre-poo being squeezed into big intestines...

And stomach churning out something close to shit...

And this bloody science documentary actually makes me a bit depressed and morbid. I consciously avoided watching benjamin button and turned to something bookish and now wat?! = =

road exam tmr, wish it could be over in no time.

终于周末了明天零下5度!抖抖抖

今天昨天前天我都很废,没读书没画画基本啥都没干就晃荡,周末来了但却是我很痛恨的周末,因为要去练桩头!7点起!上下午!两天都要!明天零下五!册那!

最严重的是,下周二就要考了,活活,随便吧。

因为懒惰+压力+早饭连续一周吃稀饭啃萝卜干喝菊花茶,我有点小变态了。

主要表现为挂在豆瓣上来回click,但又不知道要做什么,Google Reader积了七八百条没看,借了一堆书扔在墙角堆砖。

玩了个小游戏Ragball Cannon,把木偶样的小人当炮弹发射出去,看他们前赴后继、断胳膊少腿还不断抽搐的动感惨样竟颇有喜感,游戏嘛游戏,我不嗜血的。很搞笑的小游戏,如果你想杀点时间的话......我竖一根食指推荐。

我承认落后了20年,头一次贴暖宝宝ORZ 看了一下产热原理,基本上就是把电池里的粉末倒出来装纱布袋。用完了就剩一包铁锈。

暖宝宝 在日本已有 20 年的生产使用历史,始源于传统的“怀炉”,在日本统一叫“便利怀炉”,属于一次性使用自发热产品。

里面主要用碳粉,铁粉,水和食盐水再加点添加剂组成一个原电池放电,然后由于没有正负极,电子无法分正负电子导出,直接形成短路,从而产生热量。持续时间要看其中所加的量是多少。

Science world

今天是E-day,保守党当道- =上午去催了会儿票,这次保守党和自由党势均力敌每一票都很悬,他们恨不得租一排豪华轿车把张三李四亲自送到投票点投票,可惜这也是无法改变民意的。

后来,我们去了个很geek的地方乐了一下午直到关门打烊。恩,就是小学生科普教育必逛的科学馆。。。


人很少,我们从一个桌跳到另一个桌挨个玩儿智力游戏,享受着小不点儿的童年快乐。纵然有着学士的知识和智商,还是忍不住抱怨,怎么能给小孩子玩那么艰深的游戏呢!多少为自己没能在五分钟内搞定十三点一样的拼图找到强有力的理由。

诺,就是这条十三点鱼,拚到死去活来啊!

Sunny day,Salmon

This nerdy post is about a type of fish called salmon...

Salmon's not on my top list but it's a relatively expensive commodity due to rarity of wild catch (limited to one or two per day in accordance with fishery law - what's that?), unusual spawning pattern and exotic pink flesh. Anyway, we went to west van. for family branch and salmon was brought up amongst the chatters. British Columbia is famous for salmon (as Canada is known for maple, just to draw some parallel significance) and over 80% of farmed catch is exported to the States. Lots BC residents buy boxed salmon from Cosco as souvenir gifts...not that many people actually appreciate the delicacy of salmon (count me in).The Pacific coast (Toronto area) should also have plenty stocks as salmon return to freshwater lakes to spawn. The most common species is called Sockeye (scarlet body and green head during spawning). Others include Chinook(Kings,they can be gigantic) and Coho(Silvers). 2 nutritional facts about salmon: rich in omega-3 and carotenoids(explains for pink color as they consume carotenoid-rich marine life).

And as a 'retired'/'retarded' biochemist, I remember salmon sperms are rich sources of DNA. They're abundant and relatively easy to extract. I remember someone (a famous biochemist, but not so lucky at the start of his career) was sent to salmon fishery up west where he successfully purified DNA thanks to the large stock of sperms. Just who is it?

贫乏



涂了一堆字竟然没能存下来,神秘的网络啊,你是觉得我写的太无聊了么?最近无论是物质还是体力上我都贫乏的慌,虽然不愿意在精神上也逐渐沙漠化,一到晚上该睡觉的时候竟然失眠。我最不能忍耐的就是失眠,册那!还我脑袋瓜一碰枕头即睡的神力来!有时候忍不住设想,如果没有家里人支持我会是怎么个状况?这个问题经常让我碰壁。因为我从未置身于需和生活一博的背水一战,相信人在濒临绝望时会发挥强大的爆发力和潜能,但能不能摆脱下陷的处境就不好说了。我怀疑自己到底有多大的生命力,有个办法就是把现有存款都冻结起来。

Pals, curb yourselves to kingdom Plantae

There's a recent outbreak of Listeria in Ontaria and over a dozen deaths are distributed mainly in Toronto and Quebec. If you wiki Listeria, because I honestly don't know what it is except it's a bacterial infection, it says Listeria is the name of bacteria that causes listeriosis which spreads through contaminated meat products and marks down your immune system. Syndrome include gastro and neural infection. It has an incubation period up to a month (or 90 days from somewhere I read). If you're feeling nauseated, dizzy or spotting diarrhea recently, be aware!

You'd need to watch out for meat products, especially prepared meat produced by Maple Leaf (Canada's largest food producer) where the outbreak was first reported. Here's a list of recalled products on the food inspection site.

I bought a packet of Schneiders beef sausage last night...and microwaved it for a minute on high. I'll heat if for one more minute next time just to be safe...

Safest yet, turn your diet to the green.

让我再来推荐一下这本适合老百姓阅读的科普书,狂幽默啊!关键是里面提到了许多鲜为人知的天才,他们为人类的发展做出了巨大的贡献。知道么,只需一个人的智慧就能改变几百年的节奏,可惜往往这些超前的观点对当世人来说是天书中的天书。可怜你们太聪明,也可怜我们太笨。

摘抄一段关于小便的...磷元素就是这么被发掘的。

原文略,以下为粗略翻译:1675年,有个名为Hennig Brand的德国人觉得人的尿液里含有金子(他得此结论的原因之一莫过于尿液和金子都是金黄色的=.=)为了提取“金子”,他收集了50桶尿液,在自家阁楼里储藏了数把月。Brand用尽了各种方法,先是把尿液浓缩成恶心的膏状,然后做成透明的蜡。他没能提取金子,但有趣的事情发生了。过了些时候,那东西开始发光,若暴露在空气中则经常自燃 - 不久后,人们发现其内含成分并命名为“磷”(在希腊和拉丁语中意为“发光的”)。生意人利用磷制造火药,不过因为磷的提取过程十分复杂,那时的磷比当代的金子还贵(多讽刺啊)。直到1750年,瑞士科学家Karl发明了磷的工业制法,人们才终于摆脱了尿骚的折磨。

杂谈

很久不看TedTalks,今天兴致来了看了一期 - 讨论话题为Meme。这词我貌似认得,但又很肯定大学课堂上没专门提出过。

看完了模糊得出的结论是:

1. Meme是人文化的思想产物(culture,propaganda,idea,habit etc.),是个中性词,起源于The Selfish Gene这本著作(没读过-.-)。

2. 学术牛逼们认为Meme以生物繁衍的行为传播,在达尔文的魔爪下进化/淘汰。(可以形象理解为“病毒”,但介于“病毒”贬义居多,不是很确切。)

3. 怎样对待Meme:分析事实,不要被洗脑、不要强加于人、莫激动。

如果任何一个定义(idea, oncology)都算是Meme,那Meme这个词的存在也是Meme?我想到final fantasy电影里那一根根虚无的'thought threads',有点像??

昨天看了Plata Quemada(Burnt Money),讲的是以小说改编的真实故事。一对形影不离的“双胞胎”恋人Nene & Angel合伙抢劫,Angel受了伤,警察也在全面搜查。那伙人一时拿不到逃离用的护照被困,期间Angel在宗教和感情间挣扎逐渐疏远Nene,Nene很郁闷一直在外鬼混,两个人越搞越僵。后来护照落空,Nene的婊子被甩了很不爽就告发了他们,最后俩人和警察对战死在火焰中。

我介绍的很RP。。。俩男主角表演精湛很有感染力,属于心理虐待类作品,喜欢沉痛话题的人不妨看看。

大概是讲:Angel受伤了Nene帮他取子弹,因为没有麻药很痛,Nene让那女的拿Whiskey给Angel壮胆。Nene看那女的在一旁不走很烦,就说“那你来动手术啊”,女的说不会,Nene一下子狂吼“那还不走!” 取子弹时说了一泡分散注意力的话“英语单词我一个都不会,以后去纽约你一定要帮我,不然厕所都上不了。”后来老头子来了,开始严肃的话题。


土豆网上的翻译真不是人看的,比如Nene取子弹时哄Angel说'Easy Easy',翻成“容易 容易”-.-! 我看到后来完全凭中文来猜英文,累啊!

Mahjong may give rise to 'epilepsy', studies say. I can't help wonder if other major gambles give rise to the same syndrome. Keeping your brain in a consistent state of tension is gonna be a real trauma no matter what games you're engaged in...

李碧华的《水袖》里有一章讲马,黑马、白马和汗血宝马。

“印象中秦代有所谓‘汗血宝马’,明知不可得,写上去好玩而已。据说这宝马飞驰,汗出如血,乃天子之马云云。一天下间就有那么煞风景之事,后来让我知道,原来有一种寄生虫,寄生在马的臀肩和背部,每两个小时现出小疱,流汗,小疱向外渗血。。。。。。真扫兴!”

我不太明白为什么会有人视汗血马为宝,既不好骑又不好看。我看一定是被那马的糟样恐吓住了。

Efficiency is doing things right while effectiveness is doing the right thing, i.e. prioritising. So you won't be blindly busy. The theory is that people are conditioned to receive instant gratifications but the real rewards only come after long hours or days of hard work. You simply won't have the patience to see it through.

I think a big part of my self-loathing comes from poor prioritizing skills because I'm very self-indulgent and hedonistic.

Science paying attention to not paying attention
Why is the mind wired to wander every chance it gets?



NEW YORK - Researchers are studying a pervasive psychological phenomenon in which oh man we’ve got to finish doing the taxes this weekend ...

C’mon, admit it. Your train of thought has derailed like that many times. It’s just mind-wandering. We all do it, and surprisingly often, whether we’re struggling to avoid it or not.

Mainstream psychology hasn’t paid much attention to this common mental habit. But a spate of new studies is chipping away at its mysteries and scientists say the topic is beginning to gain visibility.

Someday, such research may turn up ways to help students keep their focus on textbooks and lectures, and drivers to keep their minds on the road. It may reveal ways to reap payoffs from the habit.

And it might shed light on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which can include an unusually severe inability to focus that causes trouble in multiple areas of life.

Too common to ignore
More generally, scientists say, mind-wandering is worth studying because it’s just too common to ignore.

Michael Kane, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, sampled the thoughts of students at eight random times a day for a week. He found that on average, they were not thinking about what they were doing 30 percent of the time.

For some students it was between 80 and 90 percent of the time. Out of the 126 participants, only one denied any mind-wandering at the sampled moments.

Prior work has also turned up average rates of 30 percent to 40 percent in everyday life.

“If you want to understand people’s mental lives, this is a phenomenon we ought to be thinking about,” Kane said.

Mostly harmless, occasionally hazardous
Of course, a lot of mind-wandering is harmless, as when you think about a work problem while munching a cheeseburger. The problem comes when it distracts you from something you should be paying attention to.

The result of that can be tragic. Kane noted the 2003 case of a college professor who drove to work in Irvine, Calif., one hot August day, parked and went to his office. Whatever was going through his mind, he’d lost track of the fact that his 10-month-old son was in the back seat. The boy died in the heat. In 2004, virtually the same thing happened in Santa Ana, Calif.

A more common task that demands concentration is reading. Even here, people’s minds wander 15 to 20 percent of the time, said Jonathan Schooler of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. And they often don’t realize it, he said.

He and colleagues had college students read passages from “War and Peace” and other books. The volunteers pushed a button every time they noticed their thoughts straying, and that happened regularly, Schooler said.

But more surprisingly in such experiments, when the volunteers are interrupted at random times and asked what they’re thinking, “we regularly catch people’s minds wandering before they’ve noticed it themselves,” Schooler said. And these stealth episodes appear to hamper reading comprehension, he said.

In Kane’s study, scheduled for publication later this year, volunteers carried devices that beeped at random times and asked questions about their thoughts. Most of the time when caught mind-wandering, the students said they’d deliberately stopped focusing on what they were doing.

Everyday worries
Their wandering thoughts trained more on everyday things than on fantasies, and much more than on worries. That’s similar to what previous studies have found. “A lot of what they’re reporting is ... mental to-do lists,” Kane said.

But what leads to this?

“The mind is always trying to wander, every chance it gets,” Schooler said. In his view, the mind has not only the goal of achieving whatever task we’re focused on, but also personal goals simmering outside of our immediate awareness. These are things like making plans for the future, working out everyday problems, and better understanding oneself. Sometimes, one of these goals hijacks our attention. And so our mind wanders.

Brain-scanning evidence links mind-wandering to basic operation of the brain. Malia Mason of Harvard’s Massachusetts General Hospital and colleagues recently reported that mind-wandering taps into the same circuitry that people use when they’re told to do nothing — when their brains are on “idle.”

Schooler, who’s studying brain-wave activity associated with mind wandering, welcomes what he sees as a surge of interest in the topic. He and others say there’s plenty to learn.

One goal is finding ways to help people realize when their mind is wandering and bring it under control, Schooler said. He plans to test whether meditation training might help.

But there’s even a more basic question, he said. Why is the brain wired to wander? What could possibly be good about that?

Living on autopilot
“Mind-wandering is probably more often helpful than harmful,” Kane said. For one thing, the cost is low: despite notable exceptions, life usually doesn’t demand our full attention.

“A lot of human daily life is autopilot,” he said. “There’s a whole lot of what we need to do that we can do without thinking about it, from driving to eating .... We do occasionally miss that turn on the way home, but we get through the day pretty well.”

Given that, a mechanism that encourages us to devote some idle brain capacity to planning and solving problems “seems like a pretty good use of time,” he said.

Schooler is exploring the idea that mind-wandering promotes creativity. “It’s unconstrained, it can go anywhere, which is sort of the perfect situation for creative thought,” he said.

Mason points out that just because the human brain wanders doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a good reason for it. Maybe, she said, the mind wanders simply because it can.

But even she sees an upside.

“I can be stuck in my car in traffic and not go absolutely crazy because I’m not stuck in the here and now,” she said. “I can think about what happened last night. And that’s great.”

Artists look different

These two pictures represent the eye motions of two viewers as they scan a work of art with the goal of remembering it later. One of them is a trained artist, and the other is a trained psychologist. Can you tell which is which?

Art teachers have noted that when beginning students attempt to draw accurate portraits, they tend to exaggerate the size of key features: eyes and mouths are too big relative to the size of the head. Trained artists learn to ignore these temptations and draw the world as it really appears. Even world-famous artists such as Leonardo da Vinci have had to resort to tricks such as looking at their subject through a divided pane of glass in order to render proportions accurately. As you can see from the two examples above, even when looking at a picture, artists look differently. So which is which? I'll let you know at the end of the post.

Stine Vogt and Svein Magnussen showed 16 pictures including these two to trained artists and non-artists (psychologists) enrolled in Norway's top graduate programs in their respective disciplines, using eye-tracking cameras and software to monitor where they looked. The viewers were unaware of the purpose of the test -- they were told the study was about pupil size and response to pictures. In the first phase of the experiment, viewers simply looked at each picture in random order, and in the second phase, they were asked to view the pictures again, but to concentrate in order to remember them.

Vogt and Magnussen defined key areas of each picture -- small regions around focal objects such as human bodies or faces. This graph shows how often artists and non-artists looked at these areas:



In both cases, non-artists spent significantly more time looking at these key areas than artists. Interestingly, even artists spent more time looking at these areas when trying to remember the pictures.

So who was better at remembering pictures? At the end of the study, participants gave unprompted verbal descriptions of as many of the pictures as they could, in any order. Overall, the artists remembered more details from the pictures, but surprisingly, non-artists actually remembered more of one type of pictures: abstract pictures with no recognizable objects. Artists were able to change their viewing strategy to remember the non-abstract pictures, but with no recognizable objects in abstract pictures, there was no change in strategy.

So why do artists look at pictures -- especially non-abstract pictures -- differently from non-artists? Vogt and Magnussen argue that it comes down to training: artists have learned to identify the real details of a picture, not just the ones that are immediately most salient to the perceptual system, which is naturally disposed to focusing on objects and faces. With this in mind, there's little doubt which pictures above show the artist's eye movements -- they are the ones to the right, which sweep across the whole picture, not just the human face and figure.

Archaeologists in Italy have discovered a couple buried 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, hugging each other.

"It's an extraordinary case," said Elena Menotti, who led the team on their dig near the northern city of Mantova.

"There has not been a double burial found in the Neolithic period, much less two people hugging — and they really are hugging."

Menotti said she believed the two, almost certainly a man and a woman although that needs to be confirmed, died young because their teeth were mostly intact and not worn down.

"I must say that when we discovered it, we all became very excited. I've been doing this job for 25 years. I've done digs at Pompeii, all the famous sites," she told Reuters.

"But I've never been so moved because this is the discovery of something special."

Newsbits, emu, love

Started to ponder (PONDER) the meaning of love last night before I went to bed. Don't laugh. It's completely random but I don't think I ever understand it. I'm so protective of myself and narcissistic I never seem to, or so far, love anyone with a pure intention. Desires or an animal instinct to reproduce to maximum advantage can muddle immensely. I deem these preliminary, honest but superficial but won't you agree instincts work simpler than any attempted demystification of what we coined as 'love'... Eskimos have 50 different words for snow but never a general term for 'snow'. We on the other hand alternate among 'like', 'detest', 'love', 'no chemistry', a handful of descriptions that state the nature of relationships. And after all 'love' is an overused term we get too used to. Too complicated. How can I be so selfless as to transcend that emotion. Not coz you have a pretty face, the distance between your eyebrows and eyes is just right, your voice, your fickle caring nature, you virtually my half blood, your habits I know too well, your secrets I don't venture, your half physical contact, you filling up my vanity, your naivety the foundation of my superiority. I don't want any of that. I just want someone who can open the door for me. Show me kindness.

As if dressed for a psychedelic rave, jumping spiders sport glowing patches on their bodies to lure in eight-legged mates, a new study finds.

Jumping spiders of both sexes are known for their excellent eyesight, particularly in the ultraviolet wavelengths, and male jumping spiders are equipped with UV-reflecting scales that glow bright white and green under the sun’s ultraviolet light.

The spiders display and pose these body parts to intimidate other males. Such bright ornaments seemed a likely lure for mates, but no one had yet found evidence of them in action.

Scientists led by Matthew Lim of the University of Singapore videotaped pairs of male and female jumping spiders under full-spectrum light — which includes UV light — and under UV-blocked light.

Under ultraviolet light, the male and female were seen to hit the "dance floor" with their bodies aglow: Turns out, females have their own “glow stick” — their front appendages, called palps, glowed in a bright green hue under UV light.

As courtship progressed, the male arched its body, vibrated its palps and slinked on tiptoe toward the female. The female spider hunched, seeming to play hard to get, and then scampered away.

Researchers also observed the spiders when one sex was in full-spectrum light and the other in UV-deficient light. When a partner was not lit up by UV, the females showed no interest, suggesting that a male must show its good before courtship can proceed. Males ignored or showed much less interest in females under UV-blocked light.

Podcasts

You don't have to own an iPod to listen to 'pod'casts. This has somehow become a misnomer due to overwhelming popularity of iPod but honestly podcasts are just internet radio programmes in normal mp3 or avi formats. But, itune is so far the best podcast player as it automatically updates your podcast subscriptions and sort them in folders. Here're some selections I'd like to recommend. Yes a very long nerdy list. In practice I only listen to Naked Scientist and skip around the rest.

WASHINGTON - Was it a bird? A biplane? Or a dragonfly? A newly published study opens a fresh chapter in the debate over how one of the earliest feathered dinosaurs used two sets of wings more than 125 million years ago.

The study, published online this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, lays out a detailed argument for the biplane scenario. Sankar Chatterjee of Texas Tech University and his Canadian collaborator, R. Jack Templin, suggest that Microraptor gui used two upper wings as well as two lower wings in an aerodynamic design much like that seen in the biplanes of early aviation.

Today, the biplane is widely considered an old-fashioned rarity. And the design is no longer seen in birds, though it’s not clear if it was a step on the way to modern birds or a dead end, tested by nature and discarded.

Microraptor, found in fossil form in China, was described by Xing Xu of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003 as having aerodynamic feathers on both its arms and legs. Xu suggested at the time that it glided, extending its legs backward so its wings were arranged one behind the other, like a dragonfly.

But Chatterjee noted that the feathers on the legs would not face forward, and argued that having one set of wings directly behind another would be aerodynamically inefficient.

Instead, Chatterjee suggested, the legs of the two-pound creature could have been held below the body in flight, creating two staggered wing sections, the upper one slightly ahead of the lower one.

One other flying dinosaur, Pedopenna, also had feathers on its legs, Chatterjee said, and modern raptors such as falcons have short feathers on their upper legs that reduce air resistance as they fly.

Chatterjee first advanced the dino-biplane theory in 2005 at a meeting of the Geological Society of America, and fleshed it out for the research paper published this week.



“Aircraft designers have mimicked many of nature’s flight ’inventions,’ usually inadvertently,” Chatterjee wrote. “Now, it seems likely that Microraptor invented the biplane 125 million years before the Wright 1903 Flyer.”

Xu, who said a variety of reconstructions have been suggested since the original one, called Chatterjee’s proposal “likely,” but added that “we really need to work painstakingly to check all details and have an accurate reconstruction, and then we can compare different models in computer or even in wind tunnel, which we are planning to do.”

“Microraptor is a critical species in understanding the origin of flight,” added Xu, who was not associated with Chatterjee’s research team.

Matthew Carrano, curator of dinosaurs at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, said the question focuses on what the legs can do, and it’s a difficult problem because the fossils are flat and require interpretation as to what they would have looked like in three dimensions.

Evolutionary dead end?
Carrano, who also was not part of Chatterjee’s research team, said this creature was probably a side branch rather than a stage evolution had to pass through on the way to today’s birds.

“It’s difficult to see how this animal does anything well, it seems so ungainly,” Carrano said. “It forces us to think creatively because it’s so far off the beaten path.”

There are often such experiments that fall by the wayside, he said.

“The important thing is, because we’ve now got all these feathered dinosaurs to look at, it has kind of opened the gates a bit to speculating about how flight evolved,” Carrano said.

Chatterjee’s research was funded by Texas Tech University.

I was clearing up my over abused removable disk and came upon this wonderfully written general science book (among a sea of 'cookings', 'philosophy' etc.) It's a history book on science, from atoms bottom up to why we're what we are, sitting on top of the food chain in an infinite universe we're striving to figure out. The most remarkable feature I find about this book is, it's NOT written by a scientist. The facts were painstakingly gathered from authoritative scientists yes, and carefully churned and re-presented from a commoner's point of interest, a good sincere starting point which most of us would appreciate much more than standard textbooks facts that don't answer your curiosities without touching upon mechanical process and incomprehensible figures. Surprisingly Bill Bryson (BB for short) is a travel journalist and was the chief copy editor of the business section in The Times. He's downright humourous gifted with words. If you ever wonder about the mysteries of life, even a small question like 'why do I live on land?', you should probably take a peek at this book. (well, he might not address THIS question...)

This concise and popular piece of literature explores not only the histories and current statuses of the sciences, but also reveals their humble and often humorous beginnings. One "top scientist" is alleged to have jokingly described the book as "annoyingly free of mistakes".
