Wong Kar Wai tops Cannes jury

BBC NEWS | Chinese director tops Cannes jury

Hong Kong film director Wong Kar-wai has been named as president for this year's Cannes Film Festival jury.

Wong, whose film 2046 won critical acclaim at Cannes two years ago, will be the first Chinese filmmaker to head the panel, say festival organisers.

'Every town has its own language. In Cannes, it's the language of dream,' he said in a statement.

The 59th Cannes Film Festival will take place from 17 to 28 May.

His statement added: 'I am eager to share the dreams of the greatest talents of contemporary cinema with my jury comrades.'

He made his first appearance at the French Riviera festival in 1989 with As Tears Go By.

Last year the Cannes jury headed by Emir Kusturica gave Belgian drama L'Enfant (The Child) the Palme d'Or, the festival's top prize.
